The Central Market or Kudla Central Market is in the Hampankatta area - the center of Mangaluru city. The site is strategically located within the central business district of Mangaluru and is in close proximity to all the important places like Lady Goschen Hospital, Wenlock District Hospital, Town Hall and Railway Station. The combined plot area of Central Market and Meat Market is about 3.6 acres.
The detailed discussion have been conducted with the Central Market Association, existing owners of market, commercial and retail buildings regarding the proposed development. Detailed inventory of area and usage of all the shops and stalls, market assessment/ benchmarking for assessment of rentals of shops/stalls in the central market, in vicinity of Central market and similar buildings (as proposed) in Hampankatta area has been carried out
A high power steering committee of the State government has approved the proposal to re-construct the Central Market building at Hampankatta here as a modern market complex at an estimated cost of INR 145 crore under Smart City Mission. The detailed project report (DPR) of the proposal is also ready and the committee approved the proposal on September 22, 2018.
Fish Market
The fish market would continue to function in its existing location throughout the implementation phase of the project. Consequently, it would be shifted to a dedicated area of the redeveloped central market.
Central and Meat Market
The shops and stalls from the existing central and meat markets would be temporarily relocated to an area near the fish market. This area is demarcated by MCC as a hawking zone. All shop and stall owners would be allotted spaces in the identified area during the project’s implementation.
